建于明代位于北京西郊石景山区的法海寺已有近600年历史了。寺内有我国元明清以来现存少有的由宫廷画师所作的精美壁画。法海寺壁画填补了中国壁画史上明朝壁画的空缺，与敦煌壁画、永乐宫壁画相比各有千秋，并可与欧洲文艺复兴时期的壁画相媲美。

本丛书以公元16世纪以前西藏境内的七座古代寺院的壁画遗存为主题，这些壁画遗存分别为西藏阿里地区的古格王宫壁画、科迦寺壁画、托林寺壁画、东嘎石窟壁画，日喀则市的夏鲁寺壁画、白居寺壁画，山南地区的扎塘寺壁画。以上七处壁画的年代跨度大约从公元11世纪至公元16世纪，基本反映了早期西藏民间绘画艺术的风貌。由于这些壁画绘制年代较早，因此，壁画的图像学研究与寺院考古目前基本都处于学术研究阶段，很多图片资料将通过本套丛书首次出版。
